I have a sharp pain in my back intermittently. What can it be?!

Question:

I have a sharp pain in my back intermittently. What can it be?

The pain comes for a few seconds then leaves. It used to be when I wake up but now it comes during the day. Not every day, just once in a week.

Answers:

This isn't something you should solely be asking YA about, make an appointment with your doctor and ask him what it might be.

It is likely to be a pulled muscle, lumbago or random sciatic pain, none of which are too serious.

However, depending on where it is, it could be a mroe serious nerve-related issue which you will need to have looked at. Signs to watch out for are numbness or tingling in your legs or seat area, or any signs of weakness in either leg.

Make sure your bed isn't too soft, keep your back well exercised and make sure you're not sitting squished up and stationery at work for too long.

If it is lower down (below your belt and to one side or the other) it could be kidney or liver problems. Make sure you are drinking sufficient water (you should have at least 2 litres a day, not including caffeinated drinks), and have a glass of cranberry juice once a day to keep your urinary tract clean. See if that helps.
