Has anyone heard anything about pain pills ruining your kidney?!

Question:

Has anyone heard anything about pain pills ruining your kidney?

My husband is 39 and has had pain in his back for about 29 years. Finally in 97 after tons of hospital visits and x rays he went to a chiropractor who during the first office visit did his own x ray and said you have broken whatever it was and told him he should take the x ray to his doctor and see what he says. The doctor said he needed a 2 leval fusion which he had done. Well after almost 30 years of taking darvocet's it was to the point that he would have to take like 7 or 8 just to dull the pain and then he would just keep taken them every so often untill the pain went away or he fell asleep. Well now he doesn't take anything for pain at all but in the last 5 years or so he has been to the hospital for pain in his right kindey area about 10 times and it usually turns out to be kidney stones. He has stopped drinking soda and drinks lemonade which seems to help as he has not had to go to the hospital in like 6 months but he still has pain in the right kidney area quit often.

Answers:

The Darvocet contains the Darvon and acetominophen which is Tylenol. Tylenol is known to cause kidney damage in doses far lower than those your husband has been taking. I have never heard of kidney stones resulting but the short web search was full of articles on kidney damage and cancer caused by acetominophen and other non steroidal inflammatory drugs. If you are not seeing a kidney specialist (nephrologist) you need to see where you stand now. God Bless!
