Why do i do this? holding breath in sleep?!

Question:

Why do i do this? holding breath in sleep?

Im quite worried about myself
I keep seeming to "fall asleep" and i wake up thinking ive stopped breathing! and then i start not gasping but checking that i am still breathing,
im sitting here now - as its just happened and im shaking and sweating!! and ive actually woke mypartner up who thinks im having some sort of anxiety attack
it doesnt happen often first time its happened in a few weeks and im quite worried now sitting here shaking
im under a great deal of stress, and before i went to bed i was up working out my finances - so i wonder if i went to bed anxious and this why it happens, can that happen? or do i have something wrong with me??
Thanks to any input

i honestly dont think i have sleep apnea because i only do it when im going to sleep - not when ive been asleep a while!
im under a great deal of stress at the moment as well, which makes it worse
maybe i should go to the drs for peace of mind! because i just cant not go to sleep!
the answer about it being normal, is the same as what my mum said to me about 20 minutes ago, she said its your mind playing tricks on you and can happen when your stressed. i then realised my friend who suffers with panic attacks, gets the same sensations!! like she wakes up suddenly after like 5-15 minutes after being asleep thinking she cant breathe!! her chest is usually tight and she is shaking and sweating!
thanks for all the answers, and keep them coming, i want some more input!

would just like to say the last answer is a bit rude!!
i rang my partner and woke him up that way we dont live together, i live with my incredible stressful mum and dad! mum actually said i was insane and needed locking up so its nice to know she isnt the only insensative one
im not freaky or have a sad life, it frightened me a lot! and i just wondered if anybody else had it or knew what it was!

Answers:

Dont worry about this at all, no need to blow things out of proportion. Loads of people do this. Its just part of relaxing when your asleep and everything slowing down. Done it all my life and so has everyone ive ever spoke to about it. You havent stopped breathing at all, just doing nothing so your body dosent need as much from you , chill, honestly, your fine. x
