This is very serious! Please help...?!

Question:

This is very serious! Please help...?

My dad is 63-years-old and he had a stroke in December 2005 and since then he has only gotten worse. His hands and face feel numb and it's hard for him to do stuff. The doctors dont help him, and just tell him he's going to get better and he never does. I'm afraid something bad is going to happen to him, and the doctors dont care! What do I do?

Answers:

It is always hard to tell what will happen. Some people recover and some don't. A stroke affects the brain by depriving the brain of oxygen...via no blood flow. Brain cells start to die in about 5 minutes when no oxygen is supplied so depending on the amount of time between the stroke and re-establishment of oxygenated blood to brain will determine how much brain damage was done. Lack of motor skills especially to one side is common. Some people have the resiliency to get back to some degree of normalcy but unfortunately some do not regain their motor skills. It sounds like your dad's was not so severe and in time his brain might work around the "dead" sections and regain sensation and/or acute motor skills. It may take several months to a few years. Encouragement and help is all you can do for him. Sometimes positive emotional support can help. Make him feel good about himself and praise him for doing simple things...if he thinks things are going to get worse they will. If he maintains hope and has support, things can get better. Maybe not physically but mentally. good luck to you and your dad, I hope things get better.
