I jammed my finger, did it dislocate?!

Question: I jammed my finger, did it dislocate?
I was playing basketball earlier and I jammed my finger on a ball. It bounced off the rim and landed right on my index finger. It hurt a LOT and it swelled up to almost 3 times its size. I couldn't move it and the nurse had me put ice on it, and it's not swelled up that much, but it is thicker than it was before...I think the bone isn't aligned right, either. It goes in on one side and there's a ledge on the other side. It's the middle joint on my index finger. Did I dislocate it or something? My other finger on the other hand doesn't do that...

Answers:

The swelling and enlargement does proove much about a fracture or dislocation, but the deformity/misalignment are pretty good indicators that there may be more than just a sprain. Definately go get it X-Rayed... you don't want to mess around with an injury to such an important part of your body.

It's possible that you dislocated it or broke it but the only way to know for sure is to go to the doctor and have them do an x-ray and examine it.

It actually sprained. Don't use it that much.
