Answers:

I have that inhaler. It's called ProAir HFA (albuterol sulfate). There are several different brands of albuterol sulfate.

The most common brands of albuterol sulfate in the USA are:

- Ventolin HFA: a blue inhaler with a permanently attached cap and a metered dose counter (very handy for knowing how many doses are left)

- ProAir HFA: a smaller red plastic inhaler with a white cap.

- Proventil HFA: a yellow plastic inhaler

If your doctor gives you an albuterol sulfate prescription (without specifying a specific brand name), the brand that you get will depend on the pharmacy that you visit and (if you are using insurance) whatever your insurance will cover.

Of the three, I prefer Ventolin HFA. It doesn't have as strong of an aftertaste. The cap is attached to the unit, so you won't lose it accidentally. The meter is useful, although unfortunately they say to throw the inhaler away after two months.

ProAir HFA is good. The puff comes out a little weaker and the taste is awful... but the albuterol works just as well. It's also cheaper. If you go to their website at www.proairhfa.com, you can get a coupon for a free inhaler. Most pharmacies like CVS carry it, so it's not hard to find at all.

Obviously, you need a prescription in the U.S. to buy it legally... but if you have asthma you should have no problem getting a doctor to write one for you. You could even ask the pharmacy to call your doctor to ask for this.
