What is a block and pain pump for surgery?

I'm having surgery on my shoulder next Thursday. a guy hubby works with suggested a block and a pain pump. what are these and how do they work. I'm having rotator cuff tear repaired.

I've never had this kind of surgery so is it not that painful...

yes, get a PCA. it will control your pain. it's vital. usually morphine.
