My husband has decided to quit smoking! What can I do to help?!

Question:

My husband has decided to quit smoking! What can I do to help?

I understand that this will probably be a very trying time for him. I want to make it easier on him, not drive him crazy! Ex-smokers, what did your spouses do that was helpful/harmful?

Answers:

Clinical studies have shown that people with good support systems have better quit rates than others who do not. It is great that you are there to support him through this very tough time. Your help could be just the thing to help him quit!

I think one of the best things you can do for him during this time is give him positive reinforcement. You can do this by telling him you are proud of him for trying to quit and doing so often. Also, he will have to stay busy when he has cravings. It's good to become active during these times and you could do things with him such as go for a walk, play a game, or just get out and do something.

You could also help him figure out a plan for how he can stop. It's good to choose a quit date. Also to help him figure out what his triggers are. Some people like smoking in their cars, others right after they eat a meal, etc. Helping him figure out when his top times to smoke are and helping him form a plan of how to avoid it and or combat it could be invaluable.

There are also many options for nicotine replacement therapy and some prescriptions options as well. Your best contribution though is probably in the way of support and understanding. Also a little of forgiveness for the inevitable grouchiness the first few days! Goodluck to you both!
