Why does your voice sound different when you have a blocked nose?!

Question:

Why does your voice sound different when you have a blocked nose?

Everyone knows the expression "sounding 'nasal'" but why does that happen? I mean, the sound comes out your mouth right? What does your nose have to do with your voice?

Answers:

Your nose isn't only for breathing, but is also a resonating chamber for speech. Instead of being the usual tunnel that it is, mucus plugs block off the exit and stop the 'echo' or resonation of the sound that escapes through the nose. Have you ever been in a sound proofed room? Sound doen't seem to bounce. It is just flat, matt, nearly muted in tone. If you know about sound tech, it's kind of like turning down the reverb. or gain in the sound system.
