But some critics of methadone treatment believe that it represents substituting one drug for another. Such critics see no distinction between heroin as an illicit drug and methadone as a medication, which is used in conjunction with other treatment services. Research has proven the drug substituting assertion to be false. Heroin and methadone have completely different pharmacologic actions though they do act in the same way upon the same brain receptors as methadone is a synthetic opiate.
