I have numorous knots in my back that cause severe pain does anyone know what may cause them?

I have had these knots for years some of them are as big as a cucumber. I even have knots on top of knots. I cant seem to get doctors to understand how bad they are. I would just like to know if anyone might have similar probiblems or what might be the cause.

I have the same knots in my lower back and they hurt so badly, my husband tries to rub them for me and I have also gone to a massage therapist and it hurts so bad to touch them that I cant even get a lower back massage, I was told that they are calcium deposits and the only way to get rid of them is actually through massage. I don't know why it happens but it does I feel ya cause i have the same problem on top of lots of others... good luck in finding peace with this instead of pain!
