Dangerous to have hip surgery?!

Question:

Dangerous to have hip surgery?

does anyone know if it is safe to have a hip replacement when you have aneurys's. also can anyone tell me the hosp stay for a hip replacement and do you have to have p. therapy after.

Answers:

Since hip replacement surgery is usually considered an "elective" procedure [meaning that it isn't likely to be done on an emergency basis and therefore may be planned for and scheduled well in advance], ortho surgeons usually assess (and also have the patient's primary care physician assess) the medical status of the patient before operating. It's unlikely that surgeons would do this procedure on someone whose health would be seriously compromised by major elective surgery. This is the reason for the battery of pre-op tests that precede such surgery.

A typical hospital stay after hip replacement these days would be 3-5 days. I have had both of my hips replaced in separate surgeries several months apart and I was in the hospital 4 days for each.

I had visits several times a day from physical therapists while in the hospital. This was continued after I went home by a therapist who came to my house about 4 times over the next 2 weeks. I did prescribed exercises 3 times a day every day even though the therapist didn't come every day. After that (at about week 4) I began outpatient therapy 2-3 times a week. This lasted about 5 weeks and I was on my own after that. However I continued to do daily exercises for several months.

By the time I had my hips replaced, I was this close to spending the rest of my life in a wheelchair. As it was, by surgery day I couldn't take a step without a cane. I consider this surgery a major miracle. It is one of the most successful surgical procedures done today in terms of how it relieves pain and restores function in people who would otherwise become burdens to their families and to society. It has given me back a life.
