I just qualified for SSD but won't receive Medicare for about 2 years. Can I get!

Question:

I just qualified for SSD but won't receive Medicare for about 2 years. Can I get Medicaid and how do I apply?

I was approved for Social Security Disability and will begin receiving my check in September. However, I won't be eligible for Medicare until March of 2009 (2 yrs after becoming officially disabled) Do I qualify for Medicaid? I have diabetes with severe neuropathy and no longer have insurance. How do I appy in the state of Florida? An answer from a person who has actually been through this will get the best answer award.

Answers:

If your gross monthly income is less than $749 (if you are single) it appears you will qualify for the MEDS-AD type of Medicaid.

If you need in-home care and your gross monthly income is less than $1869, you will want to look into some of the waiver programs (HCBS). There is an additional requirement that a medical professional assess your care needs (called level of care) and determine if you qualify.

It never hurts to apply -- it just takes a little time. Then you find out first hand from a worker what might be the best program for you.
