The only good way to find a health insurance plan is to visit a local independent agent. This person knows the market in your area and can find the best plan for your situation. They don't charge you anything for the service and they're there to answer any questions after the sale.
You'll find if you try to do this yourself on the internet you will get confused by the 1000+ plans available. How do you know which plan is best? How do you know which plan would cover a pre-existing condition and which plan will decline you? The local agent will know the answer.
Stay away from the medical discount plans. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge of health insurance and do not need to be licensed. The plans are not regulated by the state (however, some states are starting to ban them from selling the plans). No regulation means you have little recourse when problems arise.
If you are tempted by these discount plans with the low premium make sure to get a list of local doctors before signing up. Call the doctors and ask if they still take the plans (many will not have heard of the plan or don't know they're listed) and if they're taking new patients.
