The reason is, is that my mom is alergic to codeine but not hydrcodone. And they are "relatives" so....

Answers:

Codeine (usually prescribed as Tylenol with codeine, Tylenol #3) is a opiate narcotic pain medication. Oxycontin/hydrocodone is a synthetic narcotic usually called lortab or Vicodin. There is no relationship to codeine.

Oxycotin is a 12 hour time released man made product and is not related to codeine. Oxycotin is HIGHLY addictive and is supposed to be used in severe pain issues only. It is prescribed for a short time after things like a total knee or hip replacement. It is not intended to be used for arthritis pain or less severe pain issues. I know of quite a For older people like 80's year old who take it for things like arthritis and they are all hooked.

It is also highly abused. Unfortunately people crush the pill and take it giving a 12 hour dose immediately. There are many confirmed deaths from this.

As a resul of his your mother is better off with hydrocodone or oxycodone for pain relief.

The manufacturer recently came out and admitted that they marketed it to D's as a great pain pill, bu they failed to discuss the addiction properties. There is a lawsuit going on about this at present. The drug maker has also had to pay an enormous fine to the govt for this.
