why can't i sleep at night?!

Question: Why can't i sleep at night?
i have trouble sleeping each night and often stay awake from 3-5 hours after i initially get into bed, i try reading, making myself tired, pretending to be sleeping and all the basics for trying to get to sleep. i can't pinpoint a reason as to why i would have insomnia if that is what this is.. what are some reasons i could be feeling like this and how do i combat this? it's starting to disrupt my life ! i below is some information about myself:

i'm sixteen years old, female, eat a fair amount of junk yet healthy food too (i've been more healthy lately), i currently have half yearly exams for my final year at school yet i don't think this is stress induced, i keep my laptop on near my bed at night (apparently this can affect sleep?)

not sure what else to add but if i left something important out let me know and i can add it in.

Answers:

I'm not a doctor, so this is just my best advice from personal experience. I will say this, though- if the insomnia has been going on for very long (more than a few days), you should probably talk to a doctor.

Aside from that, I will list the things I sometimes do for insomnia- maybe it will give you some ideas.

1. A warm shower or bath about an hour or so (maybe less) before bed, especially with lavender scented body wash or soap.
2. Reading sometimes relaxes me, but it needs to be something that isn't exciting or scary. This doesn't work for everyone.
3. Drinking warm milk or hot cocoa helps a lot of people.
4. Soothing music- I prefer instrumental or soothing vocals- is often relaxing.
5. Using a sleep medicine like Tylenol PM or Motrin PM sometimes is a good idea. It's great for occasional insomnia and will usually get you a night's sleep when you need it.
6. There are some yoga routines and breathing exercises that can help you relax. The website for Yoga Journal magazine should have something you can use.

I've discovered, in my own experience, that sometimes when I've had a night or two of insomnia, it's harder to go to sleep the next night. Those are times when I'm most likely to use the sleep medicines; and usually after getting one good night's sleep, the insomnia goes away for a while.

I hope this helps.

Common sleep aids include warm milk, Chamomile tea, 5-HTP, Melatonin and Valerian.

If you are having trouble switching off at bedtime some light exercise at bedtime often helps you to relax, unwind and switch off and that often improves your sleep. Strenuous exercise at bedtime is likely to ruin your sleep.
