Is my sons thumb broke?
My son is 4 and had a rock roll over his thumb today, it is swollen and blue and hurts him pretty bad. When he trys to bend it, it hurts. I cant take him to the doctor until the morning so I wonder if it is broke and how soon are you suppose to take them to the doctor in order for them to do something about it. Will tommorow be to late? How can I tell if it is broke?

Answers:

First of all, give him some Tylenol or ibuprofen. That will decrease the pain and you may be able to put some cold material on his thumb.

Do NOT put ice directly on the skin as you can cause frostbite. You can use a bag of frozen peas or corn or most drugstores sell cold packs that can be applied. Do not use these for more than 15 minutes every hour.

Do not continue to move his thumb.

Crush injuries can result in enough damage to the tissue that you get enough swelling to cut off the blood supply. That requires urgent intervention to prevent loss of that body part. It is impossible to tell without looking at it whether or not he has that going on.

Your options on a Sunday night are limited mostly to emergency rooms. They will be able to do xrays and assess the damage and let you know if you need to see an orthopedic surgeon. They will also be able to give him medication for the pain.

I would recommend seeing someone sooner rather than later to avoid possibly losing his thumb. While it is very likely that this is a simple break the fact is that there is a possibility that something is seriously wrong and he needs to be seen.

If you decide to wait until tomorrow, then you should call your pediatrician's office first thing (and they may tell you to go to the ER) or you should be going to an urgent care center with xray capability first thing in the morning.

You can alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 3 hours for pain control. In other words, a dose of tylenol at 10 pm, a dose of ibuprofen at 1 am, a dose of tylenol at 4 am, and so on. I still recommend seeing someone tonight.
