Is my twin smaller than me because of less sleep?!

Question: Is my twin smaller than me because of less sleep?
My twin brother and I are 15 years old, i'm 5'10 and 135 pounds but my brother is 5'5 and 120 pounds.

I always thought it was kinda weird since he's a guy so he should be bigger, but I think it's because ever since we were like in 5th grade when we moved we've shared a room, and he doesn't get to sleep until like 4 am, even on school days. He just plays video games lol, but it doesn't keep me from sleeping because I'm used to it.

Answers:

Yep, you probably got more nutrients in the womb.

While birth size usually has nothing to do with how big people will be when they're older, in twins it's different. If one twin is significantly bigger than the other at birth, the bigger one is likely to stay bigger.

Since he's a guy though, he'll probably pass you up in a few years.

Also, in studies, sleep is linked to growth. If he always goes to bed at 4 am, he's probably getting 4 hours tops on school days. That's definitely not good for growth or health. You said this has been going on since 5th grade, so he didn't get the sleep needed at his age, and he still isn't.

Sleep deprivation usually causes weight gain though, so it's likely the main cause is that you got more nutrients in the womb. Sometimes one twin gets more nutrients because it sort of blocks the other twin from getting nutrients. Hard to explain but that's what I remember from college =P

Also, you were big for a twin at birth. Likewise, you're taller than the average girl, so naturally, you weigh more. Don't worry, you're at a very healthy weight for your height.

If I were you, I'd encourage him to get more sleep. Another study shows that people deprived of sleep are more likely to get diabetes. The results only showed a correlation though. It's still uncertain if sleep deprivation is a cause of diabetes, but why take the chance?

Health major

Was he born small or were you guys around the same size when you were born? It's probably that he hasn't had his growth spurt yet. Not sleeping enough is not going to have that major of an effect. Alternatively, sometimes one twin gets more nutrients than the other, so they end up different sizes. In that case, he would have been underweight when born.

No, it's because girls and boys have their growth spurts at different times... Girls normally stop at 14 or something then don't really grow any more after that, guys don't stop growing until later on...

I think it's because you ate more and got more nutrients when you were in your morth's abdomen. lol
