My back hurts so bad! How can I make it stop?!

Question:

My back hurts so bad! How can I make it stop?

It's in my lower back, I can't bend or even sit comfortably without it really hurting. I have to go to school tomorrow and i don't want to be uncomfortable during finals. Please help, any tips welcome! By the way, I already took tylenol & it didn't help much.

Answers:

It depends on what the cause of your back pain is. Most likely it will not be gone by tomorrrow if it hurts that bad. Usually doctors say ice it if it is a new injury. It doesn't hurt to try, but didn't really help me. Get a heating pad (one that does not have automatic shut off if possible.) Sleep tonight either on your back with a pillow under your knees or on your side with a pillow between your knees. that will help the muscles to relax while you sleep. Get one of those Icy Hot patches to wear under your clothes tomorrow. It will help. I find advil works better than tylenol. Take it every 4 hours to reduce iflamation. I would send an e-mail to my professors right now, just in case you cannot make it to your final tomorrow. Sometimes your muscles can stiffen during the night which may make it difficult to move tomorrow. Yes, you might actually feel worse tomorrow. If this is the case, I would call a doctor. If the pain is causing you to miss your final, I would go to the hospital for two reasons. First to get something to alleviate the pain, second, to get written proof to show your professor. They will have to give you a make up if you were in the hospital for health reasons beyond your control.Do not do any bending or lifting. If you must sit up, put a pillow behind your back to support it, but laying down and resting is best. You can go to webmd for more info.
