I hit my heel really hard and it hurts. do you think it's broken?!

Question:

I hit my heel really hard and it hurts. do you think it's broken?

Yesterday, I jumped off a ten foot lege onto those airfilled cusions. When I landed, my feet sunk all the way down and my heels slammed onto the cement. I didn't hear any cracking or popping but it hurt pretty bad. When I walk on it, it doesn't feel like my muscle but it feels like the its coming from the bone. When i massage it, I can't feel any pain but I can only feel pain when i push hard or step on it. It doesn't really hurt to move my foot around but when i step onto my heel it hurts pretty bad. It helps when i put more weight onto the outer edge of the foot when i walk but it stil hurts pretty bad. It hurts really bad but I can bare standing on just that foot so I don't think it's broken but I'm not sure what else it can be. The pain is only in my heels. Is there any other explination other then my heel has a small crack in it?

Answers:

You likely suffered a deep bone bruise of the heel bone. It could have a crack in it, but only a x-ray will be able to show that. Deep bone bruises of the heel take some time to heal up - about 2-3 weeks in a walking boot. As long as you give it the time to heal, you'll be back in no time. If you try to push the issue, then the bone bruise takes longer to heal. The key here is early ice and Advil/Aleve for the pain and swelling and a short time of immobilization in a walking boot. Hope this helps!
