How to recover from an often used muscle?!

Question: How to recover from an often used muscle?
I pulled the muscles from my sternum 5 months ago and i laid off of doing practically anything for almost 2 months and then i started lightly working it out a bit with the lowest possible weight..anyways, i picked up my 500 lb book bag the other day and wripped them again and i thought they were healed!! what should i do?

Answers:

problem is that you did absolutely nothing to build your strength up..then picked this bag up without thinking how....get back to the doc to find out the level of injury (actually re-injury) because they probably were healed already....then ask him when you can start upper extremity exercises..low level..then you progress, slowly, while you monitor how your sternum & the muscles associated respond to that level of experience;; if you have a hard time with this, then ask the doc for a PT referral...also, when you actually try to pick that bag up in another two more months...ya pick it up from belly button level & closely, while you brace your arms & pull to your belly, then you actually carry it that way...also remember not to bring either arm behind your trunk as you're healing, & press/palpate the pects before & after 'exercises' to help promote circulation & mobility to the tissues...this is not a hard rehab if done right..& if ya don't get it, or are confused on how to get from one step to the next without re-injury, then get the pro's to help...good luck!! & btw, I wouldn't hesitate to remind your school of how much your bag weighs...in my profession, we call it an occupational hazard...

500 lb book bag? Geeez! Go to the doctor and never pick up a book bag that heavy again
