Is it normal to be swollen and numb five days after an operation?!

Question: Is it normal to be swollen and numb five days after an operation?
I had an operation on Tuesday which involved an incision to my groin, (hernia repair). Since then, my groin has been swollen on the side they did the incision, and feels numb when I touch it. Is this normal? Should the swelling last so long? What can I do to reduce it? Would a short walk each day help?

Answers:

very normal, and to reduce it i would say ice it...i would actually limit exercise for the healing process

yes it is
it really does depend on the surgery and i haven't had this operation done so i can not answer with complete confidence
but,
i was swollen and numb for like two months after spinal surgery and the scar is still numb and it will always be numb
i'm pretty shore for any surgery five days after you would still be swollen and numb
just remember your meds :)
hope you get better soon ;D

also just a heads up, i had a part of my hip bone removed that was close to the groin area and i was not able to run for almost two years after, i mean you can run but you will get a VARY sharp pain, so maybe not to much exercise

Yes its normal but one wishes that it wasn't. I had to have the inguinal groin key-hole surgery done about sixteen months ago. I was black and blue all round the abdomen and around the groin. And it hurt too, and was discomforting for a long time afterwards. About three months for the bruising to disappear.

You will have to rest, and not do any chores for some time. I wouldn't advise the walking, but that's up to you. My age is 75 so perhaps maybe different in my case.

The key-hole surgery that they do is supposed to be less intrusive than the conventional operation.

That means less muscle and flesh is cut. In my case there were four points of access around the abdomen. And the surgeon looks through magnifying lenses and a camera to see what he's doing.

Try not to worry too much, and take your mind off the progress albeit slow. And I was put to sleep, while it was done, and you know when they woke me I didn't think they'd done it, said have you started yet? Weird sense of time. Whatever they give you is sure fast acting.

It can take a long long time to recover properly everyones body is different. It will be numb as nerve endings have been severed they sometimes come back after a time.Of course you could have infection but I think the swelling is perhaps normal.however you'd be best to get it checked out with the doctor.

standard reply is consult with your doc but I have to say that it sounds normal to me, I had the old V..... operation a couple of years ago and had to walk around with the tackle of an elephant for two weeks.

bitter exerience

Go to the hospital
