I JUST started massage therapy and PT today and I felt fine until 10 min after PT then I lifted my arm and I got a sharp pain in the side of my rib I have had this pain b4 its when I hurt my rib cage (Tore my muscles bad) they never completely healed but my neck is VERY sore so what can I do to relive the soreness?

She was very gentle but she had to push my limit to see what I could and couldn't do.
The massage therapy was AWSOME it was the PT that hurt:(

Answers:

In PT there's the no pain no gain mentality. I had a nasty car accident that lost me the mobility in my knee and my muscles atrophied. It hurt like a mother, but you have to push yourself. Follow the ice/heat routine, and let your PTist know how you're doing. Always let them know if you're ready for the next level or not, and always keep an open line of communication. They need to know where you're at to better help you. I was very aggressive with myself during my PT, and I progressed a lot faster than they thought I would, but I knew my limits, and I pushed them from time to time, but never to an extent that could be detrimental. Just give it some time. You just started, it will get better.

Experience

One good post PT therapy is called a contrast bath. First you ice the sore region for 20 minutes. Then a heating pad for 20 minutes. Then repeat each once. Also, you should take an anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin etc.), aspirin or naproxyn (Aleve). Tylenol really isn't an anti inflammatory. Then drink LOTS of water tonight to help flush all the crud out of your system that the therapist worked loose.

Years of 'ouch!'
