How should your glasses fit your face?!

Question:

How should your glasses fit your face?

For the last 10 years, I've worn contacts and I have never worn glasses for more than a week--ever. I am currently experiencing some eye problems that prevent me from wearing them and I'm not sure how long it will be until I'll be able to wear contacts again (could be tomorrow, could be a month or more).

Anyway, a month ago I had to dust off my 10-year-old backup pair of glasses and they don't fit me correctly. I want to get the frames refitted at the optician tomorrow, but what sort of criteria should I use to judge if they fit correctly? Right now I have red spots on my nose where my glasses sit and pink circles on my face under my eyes so I know it doesn't fit right, but I don't what it should feel like normally.

Basically, when you try on a new pair of glasses, how do you know that they've been adjusted correctly? Also, do you have any advice for feeling better about your self-image when wearing glasses?

Answers:

When you look in the mirror, your eyes should be dead center in the lens. If they are not, the frames are the wrong size. Other than that, it is just a matter of choosing the most comfortable frames. The optician should be able to adjust the frames to fit you correctly and answer your questions on how the frames should fit.

I have been wearing glasses for about 10 years now. When I get a new pair of frames, I let the optician adjust them, then return in a few days if they are uncomfortable. If I place my frames on the table they will not be level and should not be adjusted to be level. Your ears are probably at 2 different levels and your eyes are probably not level either. The frames should be adjusted to sit level on your nose and not on the table.

You (or your insurance) are paying a lot for those glasses, let them work for their money. Besides, they are experts, they do this every day. Unlike most other purchases, you can return whenever you glasses begin to feel uncomfortable to have them adjusted even if it is months later. Most opticians will not even ask if you bought your glasses at that store. I walked into a LensCrafters once while at the mall because the lens popped out of my glasses. They put the lens back in, replaced the screw, cleaned my glasses, and made minor adjustments to the frames without even asking where I had gotten them from.

PS - if you find the right frames, they will look so natural on your face that people may not even realize that they are new.
