I had some anti-dilation drops put in and now my eye has been red for over a wee!

Question:

I had some anti-dilation drops put in and now my eye has been red for over a week. What's that all about?

I had some anti-dilation drops put in my eyes after an eye appointment and it irritated my eyes, they feel better for the most part but my left eye is still red. Does anyone know if this is dangerous to have a red eye like this? Why isn't it going down?

Answers:

You are experiencing exactly what you think you are experiencing. When the drops to reverse dilation first came out (I used a drop called Revise) I was hopeful that my patients would be able to have a dilation performed and then be able to return to normal within an hour of their dilation. As is the case in many things, though, I soon found that the negatives of dilation reversal outweighed the positives. MOST patients experienced immediate redness and irritation. The lucky ones tended to resolve within a few hours. The problem is, though, that most dilations with Tropicamide tend to resolve within 4 to 5 hours without any reversal. The irritation associated with reversal, though, can sometimes as you have noticed last quite a bit longer than the inconvenience of dilation. So pretty quickly I stopped using reversal drops.

So to answer your question, I doubt it is dangerous but it sounds like your eye is just having trouble quieting down from the inflammation. Since it's been over a week I would recommend you call your eye doctor. He can prescribe an anti inflammatory drop such as Pred Forte or FML that should relieve your symptoms very quickly. Hope this helped.
