What's wrong with my eye?!

Question:

What's wrong with my eye?

Why is it when it's dark and I look at lights, traffic lights at night, for example, I see a halo around each light? It's just in my right eye. I wear glasses for being nearsighted, and at my last eye exam, they said I had some macular degeneration in one eye. Don't remember which. But, my eyes burn and itch and turn red a lot. Can allergies cause the halos? And yes, I know, I'm going to make another appointment. I just wanna know if anyone else knows what's wrong and if it can be fixed. Thanks!

OK, the halo is whatever color the light is, like one simple green ring around a green light. And I'm 45. Getting old.

Answers:

The halos are a common symptom of cataracts or possibly a corneal process. Since my PRK, I've been seeing those halos too, which I never saw before. It is possible that you have dry eyes, hence dry corneas causing the halos. Because your eyes burn, itch, and are irritated, either dry eye syndrome or allergies could be to blame.

Until your appointment, try some artificial tears to see if it could be dry eyes..that's the easiest fix. If you have ocular allergies, you could try antihistamines (I use over-the-counter claritin for mine and it does seem to help my eye symptoms a little). Do not try both at the same time...do a couple of days of artificial tears...if that works GREAT! If not, try adding the antihistamine to see if that works.

Since you've been diagnosed with macular degeneration, that actually could have a little to do with your halos as well as blurry vision. When you go in for your macular degeneration monitoring, your retinal specialist should be able to tell you if you have a membrane or some macular swelling, two common manifestations of MD, that could be causing the halos. Just monitor your Amsler grid for any changes.
