About lasik treatment, contact lens and implant lens (due to cataract surgery)?!

Question:

About lasik treatment, contact lens and implant lens (due to cataract surgery)?

Which offers better visual results.

In particular i have never tried contact lens before, can you tell me more about this? Such as is it painful to put on the contact lens as its bowl shape like really scare me on putting one. And do they come in specific degrees according to my left and right eye powers? And as such do I have to change my lens over the next few years to keep up with the accuracy?

What are the side effects of lasik treatment in particular?

Answers:

I wore contacts for 25 years...they didn't hurt to put in...unless there was a speck of dust on them...in which case, you just rinse them with a little saline and try again. Contacts do come in differing powers to match your prescription that your optometrist determines with your eye exam.

I had two different powers of contacts...always...but some people are lucky and only need one power for both eyes.

Contact wearers have to have a yearly eye exam to renew their prescription for contacts. The contact prescriptions are only good for one year. This isn't necessarily because the strength is going to change, but to check the health of the cornea. From my personal experience, I had the same prescription strength for several years, I found a contact lens that fit well, and I stayed with that brand of contact as suggested by my optometrist.

Three weeks ago...I traded my contacts for PRK laser vision correction. The main side effects I have had, and to me, these are very minor and just a little bothersome, are dry eyes and a little vision fluctuation, both of which are very normal postoperatively. I use artificial tears whenever I need them...and I've actually noticed that my very slight vision fluctuations seem to be related to how dry my eyes are.

As with ANY surgery, there are risks, but overall, LASIK/PRK and the other vision correction surgeries have been shown to be quite safe, with only 5% of the population having a postop complication three months after surgery. It also really depends on the surgeon and how well versed they are.

It's a personal choice...if you haven't tried contacts...go for it...if you find the contacts do not work for you, have a laser surgery consult to see if you are a candidate.

From what I can tell from my personal experience in having glasses for 27 years, contacts for 25, and PRK for three weeks...The vision is about the same for all three. My laser surgery has corrected me to just about 20/20 (have 6 week postop in 3 weeks and will know more then)...which is how much my contacts and my glasses corrected me. Keep in mind healing times are quite different for everyone.

The implant lens for cataract surgery is different than the Phako-IOL for vision correction. I put links below for each that explain quite well the indications and procedures for each.

Good luck in your decision making :)
