Risk of optic nerve detachment?!

Question:

Risk of optic nerve detachment?

For a few months now I've been seeing circles in my field of vision that grow whenever I look just about anywhere except straight ahead. I've been to 2 eye doctors now, and they couldn't find anything wrong w/ my eyes. Now I'm thinking, what if it's not the eyes themselves that have something wrong with them, but something connected to the eyes? That makes me wonder if perhaps my optic nerve is getting stretched whenever I move my eyes off-center. Is this a possibility? How would I get this checked out?

The answers you have so far are good (at least to me).

Another thought. If these rings get bigger all the time, then have they gotten big enough to be gone?

Or do they start the same size and just seem to get bigger off center.

At 16 you are a bit young for ocular migraines, but some people do get them. The other thing is also rare at this age would be a vitreous detachment.

If you had a posterior vitreous detachment and the posterior face of the vitreous around the nerve popped off the back of the cavity and was floating around in front of the retina, you'd see, under the right circumstances, a ring. If the ring moved close to the retina, you'd see it a smaller, and it'd seem to get bigger if it floated forward as it'd cast a larger shadow on the retina. There's also a central canal in the vitreous which is a remnant of a vascular system that came from the optic nerve to the lens as the eye was forming. This canal can have pieces of vessel left over which can cause this type of symptom.

In ocular migraines the 'circle' thing has jagged lines, sort of saw toothed and they flicker. They get bigger or smaller with time and usually the inside of the flickering is dim. It's only on one side and will not cross the mid line (12 to 6).
