Can a implant lens be taken out of the eye?!

Question:

Can a implant lens be taken out of the eye?

Answers:

When cataract surgery is done, the lens inside the eye is removed, and a little plastic lens is placed in its place. There's a capsule that the old lens is removed from and the new one is placed inside this capsule or inside the bag.

These lenses have little arms on them, usually two, that are bend in a semicircle or half loop or arc, and this allows very mild pressure to hold the lens in place. After the lens has been there for awhile, these little haptics become scarred into place.

There are times when these lenses have to be removed, so there are instruments used that are made to cut the little haptics and remove the center portion. Then a new lens is placed where the old artificial one was located.

A second intervention in an eye adds risk for problems, some are bad problems, some just cause damage to other structures like the inside layer of the cornea (endothelium). They use of viscoelastics to limit this damage, but every time an eye is instrumented, there's damage and risk. Other problems include infection, retinal detachment, increased chance for glaucoma.

Most cataract surgeons are VERY skilled at doing these re-operations, if they need to.,So if it were my eye, I'd probably not hesitate depending on the 'reason' I was exchanging the lens. Is it worth the 'risk'? Ask.
