What am I seeing?!

Question:

What am I seeing?

For a while now I see flashes of lights of different shapes, sizes and colours, and what I can only describe as moving shadows or fogs of differnt colours. It doesnt happen when Im looking at a certain colour or from the same place in my eye..it is sometimes riht in front of me and other times in my peripheral vision. I dont know if it is something wrong with my eyes or something spiritual. I get regular check ups on my eyes and i have perfect vision but i dont want to say that im seeing things because they might think im a loony person. does anyone have the same symptoms or have any ideas as to what it could be?

Answers:

You're not a loony person :) Not at all. My suspicion is that you are having ocular migraines without headache. Keep track of when you see them, times, anything that seems to set them off, are they the same all the time, appear in the same order. There may be two distinct patterns, one in your peripheral vision and one in your central vision.

Once you have logged several episodes, take your log to your doctor for evaluation. He/she may refer you to a neuro-ophthalmologist, a specialist that has expertise in ocular migraines.

Always report all symptoms you are having to your doctors, eye or general practice. Believe me, they've heard it before. Positive visual phenomenon...which it sounds like you are definitely having, is usually a benign process, like ocular migraine...more bothersome than anything...but can sometimes signify something going on behind the eye in the optic nerve, or something in your retina.

If you have any pain, sudden loss of vision, either in clarity or tunnel like closing in, double vision, change in color tones that you see (red doesn't look as bright as it should) you should be seen by your eye doctor quickly, as those are signs of more serious eye conditions.

In any case, the next time you visit either your eye doctor or general practitioner, take your log and let them know about what you are seeing. It honestly doesn't sound like a psych problem at all, so they won't think you're loony by any means.
