Can anybody tell me about RGP contact lenses and wat they do for my eyes?!
Question:
Can anybody tell me about RGP contact lenses and wat they do for my eyes?
Answers:
"rigid gas permeable" or "RGP" contacts are probably one of the safer/healthier modalities of contact lens wear out there. here are their "pros" IMO:
1) cost effective: 1 pair often least more than a year
2) good tear exchange: tears regularly flow under them, kind of "rinsing" stuff away, unlike soft lenses which can "hold" something onto your eye for longer
3) can be made in high oxygen materials (hence the name "gas permeable")
4) excellent optical quality: one of the better ways to solve astigmatism and corneal distortions
here are the "cons" IMO:
1) not very comfortable at the beginning: takes a few weeks to get used to it
2) must clean them well: lots of patients are lazy about cleaning, which is usually not so bad if you are wearing DISPOSABLE soft lenses that you plan on throwing away. but you must clean the RGP's very well daily
3) causes mechanical lid interaction: which in some patients leads to GPC or giant papillary conjunctivitis, a common eyelid inflammation
4) more difficult to fit: must have a practitioner whom knows what they are doing and has experience
