Normal for Dry Eye Syndrome to "come and go"?!

Question:

Normal for Dry Eye Syndrome to "come and go"?

Most of the time my eyes are only slightly dry, but sometimes, about 2-3 times a year, the left eye gets a lot worse for a few days at a time. I was experiencing these “worse” symptoms when I was told by an ophthalmologist that I had mild dry eye syndrome, three years ago. I’m just wondering if it’s normal to go such long stretches with very little symptoms, and then have it come on full blast for days at a time every few months, in one eye, no less? (I wondered about allergies, but if that were the case, wouldn’t both eyes be affected? And wouldn’t the Dr. have known the difference anyway?)

Perhaps I should add that my dry eye is associated with contact lens wear – even though I’ve never worn them overnight and always take them out when my eyes start feeling dry (usually after 10-14 hours). The episodes of worse symptoms however don’t seem to be associated with my contacts at all – it bothers me whether I wear them or not.

Answers:

yes, dry eye can "come and go", usually depending on outside factors like the temperature, the wind speed, etc etc as well as medications you've taken and even foods you eat!

so yes, normal for it to be "worse" at some times and "better" at others.
