How do you corret a lazy eye?!

Question:

How do you corret a lazy eye?

I've had a slight lazy eye when I was younger. I'm 12 now. I wore glasses and they didn't seem to work. Then, I didn't wear them for 3-5 years and now I realized the other day it came back a little. I wore a patch for 2 days but it really annoyed me and I couldn't consentrate. Plus I read on a web site that you can get loss of vision in your clear eye from wearing it to long. I'm scared and I don't want to go back to school like this!

Answers:

The treatment for amblyopia (lazy eye) really depends on the cause!!! Amblyopia can develop if anything interferes with a child's vision in critical visual developmental period (birth-age7).
Amblyopia can be caused by difference in refractive error between the 2 eyes (anisometropia), the eyes focusing on different things (strabismus), congenital cataracts etc...
If a cataract is causing amblyopia in a child it needs to be removed so the vision can develop.
In other cases the use of prescription eyeglasses, eye patch, eye drops, special contact lenses that can occlude vision in one eye and vision therapy.
Treatment for amblyopia involves making the weak eye work to catch up with the strong eye. This can be done by blocking the strong eye with an eye patch or a dark contact lens (occlusion) or by blurring the strong eye with eye drops or glasses (penalization). This causes the brain to use the weak eye. Over time, this usually corrects the vision in the weak eye.
Hun the only way for you to have any improvement is to see an eye doctor... you cannot diagnose and treat yourself. You also need to remember that treatment for ambylopia seldom has any improvement after age 8. Once you see an eye doctor they can diagnose and treat your condition accordingly if possible.
I would highly recommend making an appointment with your eye doctor :)
