If toxoplasmosis (?) eggs (?) get into the eye fr cat feces traces in food, wd l!

Question:

If toxoplasmosis (?) eggs (?) get into the eye fr cat feces traces in food, wd laser tech help?

Apparently such eye infection cd. stay dormant a long time & then the "eggs" (?) get activated & the infection cd. cause blindness. Per old info I have, there's no medication vs. process so I wonder about laser technology that's been so useful for eye problems.

Answers:

Most toxoplasmosis is not acquired after birth. Some are. You can get antibody titers to determine 'when' this occurred. Most of the time the diagnosis is made when the infection has long ago healed itself. Toxo is a self limiting problem, at least in the retina, assuming none of the systemic, brain ....etc. stuff isn't going on.

The treatment is with either triple or quadruple medications with or without steroids. If it's a retinal lesion and not in the posterior pole between the nerve and the macula or within the arcade vessels, most retina docs don't treat it at all. It does depend on the size of the lesion and the way it looks as far as aggression. It also depends on the immune status of the patient (HIV?)

Laser and Cryo have been tried. But the little guys live in nucleated cells away from the primary lesion, so where would you laser? Where the dormant cells are..looks normal.

The laser that is used for this causes a thermal burn and isn't the type used in the lasik, lasek type of corneal treatments.
