I accidentally slept in my contact lenses?!

Question:

I accidentally slept in my contact lenses?

I accidentally slept in my lenses and after waking up i immediatly took them out. I decided to wear my glasses for the day so the lenses could soak. Do you think it would be o.k. if I wear the same pair tommorow?

Answers:

If you are wearing contact lenses that are not made to be worn overnight it will greatly deprive your cornea of oxygen.
A cornea deprived of oxygen is very susceptible to damage and infection!!! Sleeping in your daily wear contact lenses once will probably not cause any lasting damage to your eyes, but it is definitely not good for you!!! Even wearing them overnight once increases your chances of infection!
If you frequently over wear your daily wear lenses (overnight/too many hours in a day) then you will be causing damage to your cornea...whether you realize it or not!

This can result in higher risk of infection and damage that can be permanent. In serious cases this can lead to inability to wear contact lenses and even in loss of vision. This is very serious.....so if you have daily wear lenses it is very important to stick to the wear time prescribed by your doctor.
Anyone who says it is ok to wear your contact lenses 2 months at a time without taking them out as long as it doesn’t hurt is dead WRONG!!! This person probably has already caused damage to their cornea and in the future if they continue this it will result in permanent damage and the inability to wear contact lenses. People like that usually do not learn the seriousness of proper contact lens wear until it is too late!!!

The best thing you can do is give your eyes a break and make sure before re inserting your contacts they are fully disinfected! Unless any damage has occurred to your contact lenses then it should be fine to wear them again tomorrow. Just remember to inspect the contact lenses for damage before inserting them!

You made a very good decision to wear your glasses and give your eyes a break... I wish more contact lens wearers were concerned about their eye health like you!!!!!
