Has anyone had eye surgery to correct a detached retina and macula?!

Question:

Has anyone had eye surgery to correct a detached retina and macula?

My sister has to have surgery to correct a detached retina and macula. She has called the hopital to get an approx. cost but they were no help. If any one has had this surgery what was the cost. I realize each hospital does not charge the same, I am just looking for an approximate cost..

Answers:

It sort of depends on why and how she's detached. If she has a macula off detachment, and it's been off for a few days, then there's a little time. Once the macula has detached, it's harder for the vision to get back to normal.

Does she have one tear? more tears? a Giant tear? Is she very near sighted -6.00 or more?

Is she over 30?

If she has a simple single tear located in the upper half of her eye, she might be fixable with pneumoretinopexy. This is where air or gas is placed into the vitreous cavity, the head is tilted so the air bubble pushes the tear against the wall of the eye. Then the area around the tear is either treated with laser or freezing to cause an adhesion or scar that keeps the tear closed.

If they plan to put a 'buckle' around the eye for support, she'll have to go into the operating room and going to sleep is a good way to go. The cost ranges depending on the hospital, the doctors, the anesthesiologist, lab studies, etc.

I'd figure $10,000, which is cheap for an eye.
