Is there anyone out there who has keratoconus? if so, have you had treatment?!

Answers:

Just finished watching a movie with wife and friends and just stopped by to look at answers before going to bed. I noticed you have gotten no responses to your question so I thought I would just comment. I do not personally have keratoconus but I have seen several in my practice who do have and have managed their disease. Keratoconus is an inherited condition so it would be good to inform any of your children or grandchildren so they can be aware of the possibility that they may have inherited the genetics for keratoconus.

The great majority of patients with keratoconus can be managed quite well with gas permeable contacts lens. As you may understand keratoconus causes a thinning of the cornea. This thinning leads to a steepening of the corneal curvature and optical distortion. The gas permeable contact lens because of its rigidity acts as a template for the cornea and tends to stabilize the progression in steepening and distortion that characterizes keratoconus. Gas permeable contacts do not effect a cure but the great majority of sufferers will be able to maintain good clear consistent visual acuity for many years.

There are some, though, who over time do progress to the point where they are no longer able to succesfully control their keratoconus with contact lens wear. For these patients corneal transplantation is indicated. Hopefully, your disease will not progress to this point but if it does transplantation is an effective treatment, albeit much more invasive, to provide long term usable visual acuity. Hope this helped.

I wish the best for you and yours. Have a great tomorrow.
