Answers:

The value of Lasik is totally dependant upon what you desire. As a woman at age 50 who is myopic (nearsighted, shortsighted) you will have some very specific concerns.

The process of Lasik often induces temporary dry eyes. While this Lasik complication usually resolves within the normal six month healing process, dry eyes is an especially important issue for you.

Naturally occurring dry eye is a common problem in peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been shown to induce dry eyes. The combination of your age, menopause, HRT, and Lasik may be enough to cause a difficult dry eye problem.

There are other surgical techniques to reduce the need for corrective lenses that are less likely to induce dry eye than Lasik, such as PRK, LASEK, Epi-Lasik, or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).

Presbyopia is when the natural crystalline lens within the eye becomes less able to change shape and thereby change focus. Presbyopia normally becomes problematic around age 40 and reading glasses or bifocals become necessary.

When you are myopic, your eye in a relaxed state is focused for near objects. While you cannot see objects in the distance very well, without corrective lenses you can see near objects quite well if you get them close enough. People who are myopic and presbyopic can just remove their distance correction glasses to see objects near. If you have Lasik to remove your myopia, you will no longer have this ability to see near objects without corrective lenses. You will immediately need reading glasses.

There is no surgery that “cures” presbyopia, but there are a few workaround techniques. A very popular technique to reduce the effects of presbyopia is monovision. With monovision, one eye is slightly myopic and provides good near vision while the other eye is fully corrected to provide distance vision. After a few weeks the brain figures out what is happening and “looks” through the myopic eye to see things near and the fully corrected eye to see things distant.

Monovision has its disadvantages and is not for everyone, but you can try monovision with contact lenses before making a decision about having monovision Lasik.

You have many options available to you and some may or may not provided what you seek. It is important to understand that even in the best of circumstances, after age 50 you are probably going to require corrective lenses at least some of the time.

Before making a decision about Lasik you really need a comprehensive examination from a competent doctor. You may want to consider one of the doctors our nonprofit organization has certified, or use our 50 Tough Questions For Your Doctor to help evaluate any potential Lasik doctor.
