Is it worth paying $3400 for laser eye surgery?!

Question:

Is it worth paying $3400 for laser eye surgery?

I've heard of people paying way less but should I be scarred of a cheaper surgery? My dad paid the 3400 and my friends parents paid 800 per eye... why is there such a difference? I'm 20 years old and my eye doctor says that I'm a perfect candidate for it and recomended me for the more expensive one. I know I don't want my eyes messed up because I only have 2 but there comes a time when people are just charging more because they can.
Thanks for all input!

Answers:

I paid over $3000 for my eyes (together). I also researched my PRK procedure and the surgeons in my area...I didn't pick the cheapest...and didn't pick the most expensive, I picked by surgeon experience. Of course, I had to have the custom wavefront due to thin corneas...which upped my price. Check on the surgeons...good background in education and experience is well worth the extra money.

The area of the country also plays a difference in the prices. Places like CA and CO will be higher than say, AL or IA.
$1200-2000 per eye seems to be the average for the technology that is available today from my research.

I had my PRK 12 days ago...and WELL worth it...going from a -7.75 and -8.25 to a still healing -0.25 in my left eye and -0.75 in my right...and my surgeon today told me I'm not done healing yet...and seeing 20/30 in my right and 20/20 in my left.

Bottom line: Research your doctors carefully. If you find one that you feel has a good experience and educational background...that's the one to go with...regardless of the price...like you said...you only have two eyes. (BTW...my optometrist recommended me to the most expensive one...but that surgeon also did stuff like cataract surgeries and retinal surgeries for diabetic eye problems and the one I chose has focused on the cornea throughout his fellowship and post-graduation life and still teaches at a medical school on the cornea and procedures).
