Difference in eye vision!?!?!?!

Question:

Difference in eye vision!?!?!?

As we passed by a free vision screening, my 12 year old looked in, and with her left eye she could see perfectly, but with her right eye she could barely read the first line!!! What's wrong?

Could this be lazy eye? Even though it never showed up until now?

Answers:

Wow sounds like she has a significant case of anisometropia. This is when there is a great difference between the refractive errors between the two eyes! The reason why it has gone unnoticed because when the vision in one eye is very blurry the brain suppresses the vision in the weaker eye. If she has never had an eye exam before then it is likely her eyes have been this way for awhile and she also could have amblyopia "lazy eye". Anything that interferes with clear vision in either eye during the critical period (birth to 6 years of age) can result in amblyopia (including anisometropia among many other things)
That is why it is very important for a child to have an eye exam in that critical stage of eye development.
Anyways it is best to take her to the eye doctor for an exam to find out exactly what is going on with her vision! There are a few different possibilities for this vision difference and you will not know what the exact cause is until she is examined by an eye doctor!
