Blood in the white part of my eye?!

Question:

Blood in the white part of my eye?

Answers:

Sounds like you have a subconjunctival hemmorhage. When you are looking at the white part of the eye (sclera), you are actually looking through a clear membrane that floats over the sclera. There are blood vessels in and under the conjunctiva which if broken will bleed into the subconjunctival space just under the conjuntiva. That is why you will not be able to find blood on a tissue if you touch the tissue to the redness. The blood is entrapped under the conjunctiva. This blood will tend to spread out to fill as much of this subconjunctival space as the amount of blood allows. Basically this is like a bruise that you would see elsewhere on the body but it looks red because you are able to see directly through the clear tissue above the blood whereas a bruise under the skin you are not able to see the blood directly. This should be absorbed by the body just like any other bruise within one to two weeks depending upon the amount of blood in the hemmorhage. The only reason you should be concerned about a subconjunctival hemmorhage is if you find you are having them over and over. This could be an indication of some type of blood disorder or other general health problem.
Hope this helps.
