Can an astigmatism cause a headache?!

Question:

Can an astigmatism cause a headache?

I have an astigmatism in my right eye. Can that cause headaches on the right side of my head? What is an astigmatism anyway?

Answers:

Astigmatism is just basically when your cornea or crystalline lens is shaped more cylindrical like a football instead of spherical like a baseball. When the light goes through a "perfect" non-astigmatic eye it lands perfectly on the retina and the person can see clearly. A cornea or lens with a surface of a smooth baseball bends (refracts) all incoming light the same way and makes a sharply focused image on the back of your eye (retina).
However, if your cornea or lens isn't evenly and smoothly curved, the light rays aren't refracted properly
Astigmatism, no matter the source, causes light passing through the cornea/lens to focus at more than one location on the retina, causing blurred vision and sometimes ghosting. So basically when the light doesn't land on your retina correctly you can't see well.
Symptoms of astigmatism include: Distortion in portions of your visual field, blurring of vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines, eyestrain or fatigue and headaches.
Astigmatism is very common and can occur in combination with nearsightedness or farsightedness!!
The best thing would be to have an eye exam to determine if you actually have astigmatism. This could be the cause of your headaches.... but the only way to know for sure is see an eye doctor!!! :)
