Orbital Implant problems with cyst formation?!

Question:

Orbital Implant problems with cyst formation?

I've had surgery for hydroxyapatite orbital implantation however a few years later a cyst formed and had to be drained. The cyst has come back and is larger than ever, which makes my prosthetic protrude. If anyone has or had this problem, what did your eye doctor do to solve the condition?

Answers:

I work for an ophthalmology clinic (several subspecialties included in our office) and my ocular plastics surgeons have had some patients who needed cysts drained every few years. There have been other cases where the patient elected to have their current implant removed and replaced with a different one.

I would check with your ocularist (if you need names of an ocular plastics surgeon in your area), or your ocular surgeon who originally did the implantation for further options. There are some patients that have reactions to their implants and just need a different type of material for their implants. Of course, not knowing your ocular history, and the fact that I'm no doctor, I have no way of knowing. It is worth checking out, especially if you start to develop any pain.

The surgeons I work for have done a variety of procedures from "simple" cyst drainage, to replacing the implant, to taking the area where the cyst is forming and doing a mucosal transplant, to referring them to their ocularist to make sure their prosthesis is fitting well and not causing irritation and inflammation at the site of the cyst. Just depends on the individual situation.
