Question:

My precription is 20/200. Is that bad? Im only 15 so would you recommand surgery to correct my vision?

Answers:

As long as your prescription corrects you to 20/20, you're good to wait for another few years before getting any surgery to correct your vision.

Generally, the correction surgeons won't perform surgery on any correction until the patient is at least 18-21 (personal preference by the surgeon) AND has had a stable correction for at least 2-3 years. They go by this guideline because we continue to grow until we are 18-21 years of age, and in that time, our eyes may continue to change correction strengths.

I'm not a physician, but I do work for a group of ophthalmologists, all specialties including a refractive/corneal surgeon, and my corneal specialist prefers to wait until at least the patient's mid 20s to maintain that stable correction time.

If you are still interested in refractive surgery in 3-6 years, then set up an appointment with a refractive/corneal surgeon for a consultation. They will perform a complete dilated eye exam, corneal mapping, and corneal thickness to assess if you are a candidate for refractive surgery. By then, the technological advances will continue to stagger my mind (I know there are constantly studies being done to enhance the laser correction technology of today...not at my particular facility, but elsewhere in the country).

My advice would be to wait, but if you, your parents and your current eye doctor feel that it is better NOT to wait for any reason, that is a decision that you will have to come to. Get a professional, personal opinion from someone who knows your eyes, can take a look at them themselves, then take the next steps to interviewing correction surgeons. In the meantime, start researching all the correction surgery options...that might also help you and your parents reach a decision.
