About how much will an exam and contact lenses [without insurance] will cost me?!

Question:

About how much will an exam and contact lenses [without insurance] will cost me?

I'm going to get contacts but I don't think the insurance will pay for it because I just got new glasses a year ago. They pay for yearly check-ups [to change the lenses of my glasses if it isn't time to get new glasses], and new glasses [frame and lens] every two years. I know I made a big mistake by not getting the contacts a year ago and waiting until now. I'm trying to get an estimate of how much it'll cost me for the special exam for contacts and for contact lenses. How much did you have to pay for your exam and contacts? Was that with or without insurance?

Also if this helps, I believe my insurance is called VSP.

I'm nearsighted with a little bit of astigmatism. Do I have to get astigmatism contacts or regular ones?

Answers:

Without insurance I paid $90 for a contact lens exam, and $200 for 6 months worth of Focus Night & Day contact lenses. I did get a $100 rebate from Ciba Vision (which is good until July, so you might want to ask about it). If your insurance covers the eye exam, you'll probably still have to pay about $40 for the contact exam and fitting.
