What happens when I wear my contacts too long a day?!

Question:

What happens when I wear my contacts too long a day?

I have been wearing contacts for a year now. As a new busy college student, I find that I am wearing my contacts for 18 hours rather than the recommanded 8-10 hours. (I up on my contacts at 6:30AM in the morning and do not take them out until 11PM. What happens?

Answers:

I do not mind disagreeing with some of the answers! Wearing contact lenses longer then recommended can cause damage to your eyes! When wearing your contacts throughout the day proteins/lipids/inorganic matter deposits are building up on your lenses! These deposits are "Clogging" up your lenses and impeding the amount of oxygen getting to your cornea! A cornea deprived of oxygen is VERY prone to damage and infections. In more serious cases this can lead to inability to wear contact lenses and even loss of vision!
I have a couple pieces of advice for you!
Firstly with the contacts you are currently wearing you need to reduce the amount of time you are wearing them! You either need to take them out and put your glasses on when you get home from school etc.... Or if you are going out later that night then wear your glasses during the day so you can wear your contacts later that night!! I really hope you do have a pair of glasses... ALL contact lens wearers need a pair of glasses to give their eyes a break and in case a problem with wearing contacts arises!
If for some reason you want to wear your contacts longer in a day you will need to talk to your eye doctor about extended wear contacts that are meant to be worn for longer periods of time!
If you continue over wearing your current contacts you could cause damage to your eyes!!!! You do not want to risk something that serious! So either wear your contacts less or talk to your doctor about extended wear contact lenses!!!
Good luck! :)
