Dislocated Lenses in a 4 year old...Help.?!

Question:

Dislocated Lenses in a 4 year old...Help.?

My 4 year old has dislocated lenses in his eyes. He will have to have them removed. I realy do not want him to have those big thick glasses if he has the surgery. I have heard that they will put implants in 4 yr olds now, but no one around here seems to do it. We have talked to 3 eye specialist and none of them do the surgery. 1 of the three says implants can be put in 4 year olds, the other two say they can't. Does any one know if it can be done or not and also where. We live just outside of Lexington Ky so the closer the better, but will travel if need be. We have already tried UK Hospital, they can't help.

This comes from my wife's side of the family. Grdmother, mom, aunts, brother all have had the surgery. Although not ever diagnosted we think that Marfans runs in her family. A lot of the same symptons anyways. My son is going to a genealogist tomarrow to run some test.

Answers:

Intra-ocular lens implants can be placed into individuals as young as 1 year of age. However, there is the issue of what power to put it since pediatric eye balls are growing and thus their diopteric requirement actually change until they reach adulthood.

I agree that implants are a better option than aphakic (very thick) glasses and contact are quite difficult to use with children.

You should look for a pediatric ophthalmologist and not just any general ophthalmologist in your area. They would be in a better position to explain and treat your child.
