Any experiences with implanted contact lens surgery?!

Question:

Any experiences with implanted contact lens surgery?

I am considering having implanted contact lens surgery, followed by PRK, has anyone gone through this and what was your experience?

Answers:

There is no such thing as an implanted contact lens. That is just marketing.

The Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a phakic intraocular lens (P-IOL) that is implanted inside the eye just behind iris (colored part) and in front of the natural crystalline lens.

A P-IOL is generally best for someone who is under age 40 and is myopic (nearsighted, shortsighted) more than about 8.00 diopters. If you are highly myopic there is an elevated risk of retinal detachment with any elective surgery. You should have a full evaluation by a retinal specialist before elective eye surgery.

The P-IOLs approved in the US do not correct astigmatism, an irregularity of the cornea.

I question with sincere concern why you will require both a P-IOL and cornea-based PRK. This may make some sense if the PRK is only for astigmatism, but a P-IOL is a temporary fix. Long-term temporary, but it must come out if you live long enough. The P-IOL will need to be removed either because over time it has caused excessive loss of endothelial cells from the back side of your cornea, or because you have developed a cataract either naturally or due to trauma. When it is removed, whatever is done with the PRK will remain. That may or may not be problematic.

These are serious issues that need to be discussed with a competent surgeon after a comprehensive examination.
