How many hours a day and for how many days should I wear a Patch?!

Question:

How many hours a day and for how many days should I wear a Patch?

Currently, my left eye is lazy and tested around 20/40. Obviously, I would like to change that and have decided on putting a patch on my right eye so my left can, as you say, regulate. But I was wondering how long I should wear it (both in hours and days) since it might be bad if I wore it for too long. I would also like to know when i should expect my eye to improve. Faster is better in this case since my summer vacation is only so long and i can't imagine wearing a patch at school.
Also, if there were any methods that would speed up the "healing" I would appreciate it.
I'm 13 and have this lazy eye for at least 10 years
I asking here because I would not perfer a trip to the eye docter just yet but will if thats the only way to know.

I have seen an eye doctor before at a young age and my eyesight would have been worse if i had not wore the patch so this would be a continuation.

Answers:

Amblyopia, commonly called Lazy Eye, is when one eye does not fully develop vision. Amblyopia has many causes, but probably the most common cause is strabismus when the eyes to not properly align. The brain does not like the doubled vision from poorly aligned eyes and decides to "ignore" information from one of the eyes.

Amblyopia is a neurological reduction in vision quality. It has nothing to do with refraction, which could be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Glasses with prisims that align the images can sometimes help prevent amblyopia or its progression.

Self-treatment may be a waste of effort, or worse, cause a dangerous delay in proper diagnosis and treatment of the actual cause of your limited vision. A trip to an eye doctor is easier and much better than guessing and patching.

If cost is an issue, there are commonly organizations such as the Lion's Club, Society for the Prevention of Blindness (Google for your state), Prevent Blindness America, and individual optometrists who will provide eye exams without cost. Ask your school nurse. S/he probably has a list of resources or can do the research for you.
