I have a brown spot on the white of my eye. It doesn't hurt or bother me. What!

Question:

I have a brown spot on the white of my eye. It doesn't hurt or bother me. What is it and can it be removed?

Answers:

With all due respect to your other answerer I doubt you have a conjunctival nevus. From your avatar it appears that you are African American. It is very common for me to see African Americans in my practice that simply have hyperpigmentation of the conjunctiva. This is very different from a mole. A mole comes from specific cell layers. All moles have some risk, albeit on the conjunctiva very low, of becoming cancerous. Hyperpigmentation of the conjunctiva, on the other hand, is just the way you are. Kind of like a freckle. African Americans are just more likely than other races to have excessive pigment laid down in the conjunctiva. So, don't worry about it too much. Remember, though, without me actually SEEING this I can't be sure. To set your mind at ease I would recommend you go in and let an eye doctor look. Hope this helped.
